Have you ever been to Lykens?  //   Monday - September 22, 2008

Spent last weekend with a lot of cool people camping out and riding in Lykens, PA at the Rattling Creek Singletrackers BASH. Major rain all day Friday had us setting up camping in the pouring down rain but luckily some others in the group got there earlier and erected a shanty town of tarps and EZ-ups to provide us a suitable venue to settle in for some major beer consumption in preparation for the weekend riding. A little late night visit to the portable disco in the woods for observing strange native creatures wallowing in the mud and surrounded by smoke, pulsing music and strobing lights and then off to bed as we closed down the camp in the wee hours. Sluggish start to the morning but then a full day of being led around by Mr. Withers, rippin' and railing the tight loamy singletrack with it's rock challenges. A dry summer, little used trails and the right soil meant sweet conditions with just a little slickness on the rocks as the humidity stayed high. A failed crank arm by Tony B. and depleted water supply led to a route alteration towards the end but all was good as we rolled back in time for beers before Saturday night's chicken dinner and rock and roll activities. Sunday AM ride before packing up and heading back. Huge thanks to the organizers for putting the BASH on, things are just organized enough to keep rolling and avert disaster while not giving you the feeling that you are on some type of schedule. Great intro to those central PA trails, I'll be back for seconds. I barely broke out the camera, but Darius has words and pix for your viewing pleasure.

With the legs feeling a bit overworked lately I figured I'd take it easier this week. Not sure the cause, maybe just a long summer of riding catching up with me. Regardless I opted for a mid-week ride at the rolly-polly terrain of Schaeffer instead of the grunt and grind of Frederick. Met up with Todd and Full Keg for some swoopy after work buzzing of the trails. Good company and fine weather. Got out Saturday with about 10 chix and dix for a combo Watershed and Gambrill ride. Chillin' pace for me, more demanding for others but overall a good ride with more good people and more fine fall weather. Just the ride I needed for my "lighter" week. Sunday was spent conjuring up a batch of Oatmeal Coffee Stout (a.k.a. the Breakfast Stout) and India Pumpkin Ale for the upcoming Bootleggers's Bliss. Ricky d came over and lent a hand and turned out to be a damn fine brewing apprentice. Been slacking on the homebrew so it will be good to have a fresh batch on tap.
