Prepping for the winter riding  //   Saturday - December 10, 2011

So, December is here time to shift your thinking and get prepped for hazardous conditions that would otherwise keep you off of your bike. In this case, I'm talking ice. It has the ability to send you sprawling on your ass. Riding in a straight line is sketchy, trying to turn usually ends in humiliation. What to do? With a couple of hours and only a few dollars, you can roll your own studded mountain bike tires and laugh in the face of mother nature. And laugh at your friends when they end up on the cold, hard ice while you roll on by with a smile on your face. Here at SSO, we have a simple, step-by-step guide to get you set up for velcro-like traction on the slick stuff. Check our How to Make Home Studded MTB Tires article and get it done before you wake up one morning to sheets of ice and aren't prepared. And when the big freeze hits, this setup rocks for frozen pond and river racing.

Safety first! Don't go drilling holes in your leg!
